KANE — The ultimate goal for any athlete heading into the District IX AAA Track and Field Championships is to earn a berth to states, and Wednesday afternoon in Kane, four Punxsy athletes found out they'll be making that trip to Shippensburg next weekend for the PIAA state tournament.
One athlete, boys' runner Kevin Hughes — who is just a sophomore — qualified by finishing first in the district. Hughes' event was the 400-meter dash, and his time of 50.26 seconds was his best of the season and gave him first place by more than 1.3 seconds.
DUBOIS — Wednesday, the Chucks' top doubles duo of Michael Blose and Tim Pearce set out to earn a second-straight District IX doubles championship knowing all the other pairs were gunning for them, and after Pearce and Blose advanced to the finals, they were defeated in a close match against DuBois' top pair of Patrick Johnson and Matt Fultz.
Johnson and Fultz downed Blose and Pearce in three close sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to be crowned champions.
Members of the Punxsy high school baseball team, (from left) Michael Klingensmith, Luke Janocha, Ty Zimmerman and Dane Baker, pass the time during a break between rain storms playing a game, as wet weather delayed a double header with Brookville. Unfortunately, the pastime was the only game able to be played, as a late burst of rain muddied the field that many had worked so hard to get back into playing shape. The Lady Chucks' softball double header was also rained out.
BROOKVILLE — Wednesday, Judge John H. Foradora sentenced a former Big Run Volunteer Fire Department member to 19 1/2 to 40 years in a state correctional facility on numerous arson charges.
Anthony Overbeck, Big Run, was arrested Aug. 10, 2011, and charged with a number of crimes that included arson and related offenses in connection with a fire at a two-story unoccupied residence at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Union Street in Big Run. He also confessed to seven other fires that occurred in the Big Run area last year, including one that destroyed Big Run Carpet June 19, 2011.
BROOKVILLE — After two months, local police officials say the state’s new ban on texting is nearly impossible to enforce.
Locally, Brookville Borough Police and Punxsutawney Borough Police officers have not issued any texting-ban citations.
And statewide, the Pennsylvania State Police have issued only 44 citations since Gov. Tom Corbett’s new law went into effect March 8.
REYNOLDSVILLE — As another school year is ending, some students at Jeff Tech are not wondering about their summer plans, but about what course of study to pursue next year.
May 3, the Jeff Tech Operating Committee voted unanimously to eliminate the marketing/retailing and lumbering programs offered at Jeff Tech.
This action affects 27 undergraduate students.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This afternoon, four AAA schools from District IX will send their best athletes to compete at the D-IX Track and Field Championships in Kane, and Punxsy head coach Barry Young said this year's field is one of the deepest and strongest he has seen in some time.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Five teams will travel to the boys' District IX Track and Field Championships this afternoon at Kane, but two are considered powerhouses — DuBois and Bradford — and it's expected to be a back-and-forth event for the two teams. But that doesn't mean Punxsy's squad doesn't have high aspirations of earning a few surprise first-place finishes and moving on to the state tournament May 31 at Shippensburg University.
"The bottom line is, it looks like it will be a big cat and mouse game between Bradford and DuBois," Punxsy head coach John Smith said.
