Chucks edge Ridgway on mat, lose after three forfeits

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Though it lost 39-28 to Ridgway Thursday night at home, the Punxsy wrestling team took solace in a victory on the mat, as three forfeits helped the Elkers secure the 11-point victory.

In the 11 bouts that were wrestled, Punxsy (6-7) outscored Ridgway, 28-21 — winning six matches. That includes three victories by fall, a major decision win and two triumphs by decision.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Though the dust from the holiday shopping season has just settled, for one local retailer, the hustle-and-bustle is just beginning.

While the rest of the world migrates south, seeking relief from frigid seasonal conditions, flights of inquiring minds, from near and far, flock north for the forecasting of the future’s weather.

That, which can only be executed by one earthly entity: The “Prognosticator of Prognosticators” Punxsutawney Phil, of course.

The Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual reorganization meeting Thursday at the Pantall Hotel, where members selected their new officers for the year. Mildred I. Snyder, 88

Mildred I. Snyder, 88, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1922, in Dora, a daughter of the late Hollie and Dora (Pearce) Himes.

Aug. 16, 1940, she married Dallas H. Snyder, who preceded her in death Nov. 12, 1971.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Dorothy J. Snyder and husband Thomas of Dora and Lavonne A. Homan and husband John of Cochranton; and two grandchildren, Jackie Snyder and Wendy Straub and husband Jay.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Himes.

Sewer project hitting delays

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The proposed West Mahoning Street Sewer project continues to be held up due to right-of-way difficulties.

Brian Sekula, of the EADS Group Inc. borough engineers, reported at Monday’s borough council meeting that the proposed sewer project has moved along like “molasses,” saying that the group had received a highway occupancy permit from PennDOT last year and was submitted to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad a number of months ago with no reply.

Big Brothers Big Sisters expanding in Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is expanding its programs in Jefferson County, and could provide community service projects for PAHS students.

The same night that guidance counselor Emily Cassidy and PAHS Principal David London announced proposed changes to the senior project and standardized testing, respectively, Heidi Stahlnecker, program director for BBBS of Jefferson, Elk and McKean counties, discussed with the Punxsutawney Area School Board ways that both students and potential “bigs” can get involved.

Junior-high Chucks begin 2011 with a number of wins

ST. MARYS — The Punxsy eighth-grade boys' basketball team couldn't hold onto a 26-24 lead late in the fourth quarter during a 31-26 loss to Elk County Catholic Tuesday afternoon on the road.

Punxsy (5-2) was up 26-24 when the Crusaders converted two times to jump ahead 28-26 with about a minute remaining. After ECC added another free throw to go up 29-26, a Punxsy turnover led to ECC taking a two-possession lead and clinching the victory.

Raiders take out Rovers in front of 'White Out'

BROOKVILLE — In a night full of forfeits with the outcome nearly determined before it started, Wednesday night's varsity wrestling match between Brookville and Brockway featured six bouts in total, with both teams claiming three.

The Raiders (3-0), in front of a "White Out" crowd in Brookville, benefitted from six forfeits, a pin fall victory and a technical fall to easily pick up a 50-24 victory over the Rovers.

First-half lull stops Punxsy's upset chances

ST. MARYS — As has been an issue for the Punxsy boys' basketball team for a few years now, a quarter-long scoring drought cost the team an opportunity at keeping up with Elk County Catholic Tuesday night during a 52-33 loss on the road.

Punxsy (3-6, 0-3 District IX League) was ahead 9-2 midway through the first quarter, but then, it couldn't find the bottom of the net.

Twelve minutes and five points scored later, the Chucks were behind 21-14 at halftime before being outpaced 31-19 during the second half of their fourth-straight defeat.
