Brookville youngster turning heads at the track

September 26, 2011

BROOKVILLE — Most 12-year-olds dream about the day they turn 16, so they can get behind the wheel of a car for the first time, but one local boy has a head start on his peers.

Will Fleming, a sixth- grader at Hickory Grove in the Brookville Area School District, just completed his first season racing a 270 cubic centimeter powered micro sprint race car, showing many signs of improvement and success in his rookie year.

The 270cc micros — a smaller version of the 410cc sprints — are powered by what is basically a motorcycle engine and run on alcohol as a fuel source.

Spirit’s Appreciation Day a success

September 25, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Dean Martin. Frank Sinatra. Sammy Davis Jr. The golden days of the legendary Rat Pack.

It's not the kind of music on the average sixth-grader's iPod, but it's what 11-year-old Punxsy native Gabrielle Vallese likes, and she liked Dino's song “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes” so much, her energetic performance of that standard netted her top honors in The Punxsutawney Spirit's “Punxsy's Got Talent” event this past Saturday.

The retirement began with an official flag ceremony called "Retirement of Old Colors," before the worn-out and distressed flags were put into a bed of flames.

"This is a proper way to retire your flag," said Earnest Siverling, first vice and second in command at American Legion Post No. 62. "We're more than honored to do this with as much respect as we can muster."

Raiders convincing in win over A-C Valley

September 24, 2011

FOXBURG — The Brookville Raiders dominated the Allegheny-Clarion Valley Falcons from the first kickoff Friday night and eventually won 50-6.

Brookville's Brodie Zacherl had a 39-yard touchdown on the Raiders' first snap of the game, and from there, the team never let up.

"After last week's rough game, our confidence was a little fragile," Brookville head coach Chris Dworek said. "We had a good week, and we had a good practice (Friday). To have a good start keeps that momentum going from the week, so that was important."

MESORACO WATCH

September 24, 2011

PITTSBURGH — Devin Mesoraco's homecoming party was almost spoiled Friday night when Reds' catcher Ramon Hernandez was granted the start.

Several local fans of Mesoraco made the trip to Pittsburgh in hopes of seeing their favorite Major Leaguer in person.

And late in the game, their wish was granted when Mesoraco came in to relieve Hernandez.

Mike Leake had pinch-run for Hernandez in the eighth inning.

Mesoraco's fans didn't get to see him even take a swing at a live pitch.

In fact, he was left standing in the on-deck circle in the ninth inning.
