County salutes senior centers in September

September 2, 2011

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Commissioners recently proclaimed September 2011 as National Senior Community Center Month and Sept. 25-Oct. 1 2011 as Senior Community Center Week.

The commissioners are encouraging all Jefferson County residents to recognize the important role senior community centers play in the lives of older persons in Jefferson County.

“I would like to thank the commissioners and our volunteers for their continuing support of the senior centers,” Mikki Oakes, director of development and community relations for the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging, said.

High expectations will motivate Punxsy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After losing 11 seniors from last year's district-champion squad, Punxsy's much-younger girls' volleyball team isn't changing its expectations heading into the 2011 season.

"Everyone's goal is to win the district championship," head coach Lisa Kephart said after Punxsy's preseason scrimmage Wednesday. "With us working hard toward that goal, the girls are definitely motivated for this season."

Punxsy's starting squad will return just one player, setter Cassie Cook, on a new-look team that hopes to turn some heads with some new plays.

INDIANA — Indiana's boys' golf team had five different players score in the 30s on the front nine at the Indiana Country Club to defeat Punxsy, 188-211, Wednesday afternoon.

"It's tough to beat a team when they have five guys play in the 30s," head coach Josh Conrad said. "That's unheard of in District IX. Indiana always has a tough team."

Indiana was led by Matt Holuta, who shot an even-par 36 and Colton Wiggins and Steve Sanderson, who each shot one-over 37s.
