Lady Chucks sweep 2nd home meet

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks' golf team hosted their second home meet of the season, and the end result was the same as the first meet, as Punxsy swept Brookville, Brockway, DuBois and Ridgway to improve to 14-0 on the season and 12-0 in AML play.

The Lady Chucks' team total was 223 — a whopping 38 strokes better than their closest competitor in Brookville.

As is normal for home meets, Punxsy was given a record of 4-0 for the host meet, and each team it played received one loss for the day.

Punxsy's low scorer was Lauren Giavedoni with a 54.

'D' is the key for Chucks in JV win

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Chucks' defense kept Clarion-Limestone's junior varsity squad without an offensive touchdown and the running game wore down the Lions' defense leading Punxsy to a 20-6, lightning-shortened win.

The lightning struck with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter with the Chucks inside the Lions' 30-yard line, and Limestone conceded the game to avoid the 30-minute delay.

The Lions received the opening kickoff and picked up two quick first downs, but a nice tackle by Christian Falgout stopped the Lions in their tracks and forced them to punt.

Things slip away at the end for Punxsy

September 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite only trailing 1-0 with 10 minutes to play Monday afternoon, the Lady Chucks' soccer team allowed three goals in the final 10 minutes against DCC, making the score look worse than it was and giving DCC a 4-0 win.

"Defensively, we looked good for most of the game, and then at the very end, we had girls getting tired," Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said. "When you're tired, you rely on the next wing to come out and help, but that wasn't happening tonight."

Hughes also said that a big part of the fatigue factor is mental fatigue.

Chucks notch another win, blank St. Marys

September 26, 2011

ST. MARYS — The Punxsutawney Chucks boys' soccer squad shutdown the St. Marys offense and posed a 2-0 shutout to improve the season record to 7-1.

Despite the win, Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle still said there were some things he was not satisfied with.

"We didn't play at as high of a tempo as I would've liked," Shenkle said.

St. Marys has a short, compact field, and Shenkle said his team had a hard time adjusting to that situation.

Mesoraco's weekend full for Cincinnati

September 26, 2011

Punxsutawney's own Devin Mesoraco had a weekend full of baseball for the Cincinnati Reds Saturday and Sunday, playing in both victories against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mesoraco struggled in Saturday's game, going 0-for-4 at bat and getting struck out once by Pittsburgh's Jose Veras. He had two flies out and a groundout to third base.

Sunday, Mesoraco had a more successful game as he reached base twice. His game was complete with one hit and two runs.

BROOKVILLE — Most 12-year-olds dream about the day they turn 16, so they can get behind the wheel of a car for the first time, but one local boy has a head start on his peers.

Will Fleming, a sixth- grader at Hickory Grove in the Brookville Area School District, just completed his first season racing a 270 cubic centimeter powered micro sprint race car, showing many signs of improvement and success in his rookie year.

The 270cc micros — a smaller version of the 410cc sprints — are powered by what is basically a motorcycle engine and run on alcohol as a fuel source.
