Spirit’s Appreciation Day a success

September 25, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Dean Martin. Frank Sinatra. Sammy Davis Jr. The golden days of the legendary Rat Pack.

It's not the kind of music on the average sixth-grader's iPod, but it's what 11-year-old Punxsy native Gabrielle Vallese likes, and she liked Dino's song “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes” so much, her energetic performance of that standard netted her top honors in The Punxsutawney Spirit's “Punxsy's Got Talent” event this past Saturday.

Legion retires flags

September 25, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — An official flag retirement took place Sunday afternoon by the John Jacob Fisher American Legion Post No. 62 at the VFW in Punxsutawney. The retirement began with an official flag ceremony called "Retirement of Old Colors," before the worn-out and distressed flags were put into a bed of flames.

"This is a proper way to retire your flag," said Earnest Siverling, first vice and second in command at American Legion Post No. 62. "We're more than honored to do this with as much respect as we can muster."
