A.J. Parise football - Sr. division
PROSPECT â The A. J. Parise Youth Football Senior team opened its season with a 32-8 loss to the Prospect Chiefs Saturday afternoon in Prospect.
The defending league champs used two big plays early in the third quarter to turn an 8-8 contest into a 24-8 game and tacked on a fourth-quarter score to beat the Chucks in the season opener.
Punxsy opened the game with the ball, but the Chiefs defense was able to force Punxsy to punt.
STATE COLLEGE â Punxsy's boys' golf team, led by Ian Miller, placed fourth overall with a score of 245 in the Bolton Tournament Monday in State College.
Miller shot a 76 on the 18-hole course at Penn State's Blue Course, the same course Penn State's golf team plays, except the collegiate players tee off from the black tees.
His 76 was good enough for fourth best overall behind Abington Height's Eric Montella, who took first with a 72, and Bradford's Josh Stauffer, who shot a 74.
Dorothy Jean Gallagher, 75, Dayton, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born Oct. 26, 1935, in Kittanning, a daughter of the late Carl and Mable (Little) Rankin.
She was married to her loving husband of 57 years, Walter P. Gallagher, who preceded her in death Feb. 1, 2010.
Mrs. Gallagher was a lifetime resident of the area and a devoted member of Dayton Glade Run Presbyterian Church. Her gardens were her pride and joy, and she spent much time creating these beautiful landscapes.
William O. Shugarts, 91, Troutville, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born April 14, 1920, in Troutville, a son of the late Norman and Willa (Schoch) Shugarts.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Jan. 11, 1944, he married Dorothy L. (Heckel) Shugarts, who preceded him in death Feb.18, 2011.
He retired from Crescent Brick Plant in Falls Creek after more than 35 years of service. Previous to that, he worked in the Cramer Mines.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â There were many unique styles of bicycles on the road in Punxsutawney Monday, operated by a group of cyclists from Europe who are pedaling their way across the U.S. from Portland, Ore.. to Washington, D.C.. as part of "RollOver America (ROAM)".
The ROAM riders have been pedaling their way across the U.S. on velomobiles since July 28, and are scheduled to arrive Friday in Washington.
A velomobile, or tricycle car, is a human-powered vehicle, enclosed for aerodynamic advantage and protection from weather and collisions.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â This summer has been one of the warmest in some time, and many people might seek relief by going into an air-conditioned indoor space or taking a dip in a swimming pool.
But when one is on a time schedule, construction workers have no choice but to work through the heat.
Workers from Mistick Construction of Pittsburgh and area subcontractors are working daily to keep on schedule for the opening of Grace Place, a senior apartment complex at the corner of Pine and Gilpin streets â even if it means working in the heat.

BROOKVILLE â The U.S. Amateur Golf Championship begins at 7 a.m. today, and Brookvilleâs own C.G. Mercatoris will be playing it a second time.
âIt feels great,â Mercatoris said. âAnytime you can get into the U.S. Amateur, itâs probably the best amateur tournament in the country. Iâm very excited.â
Mercatoris, who competed in the U.S. Amateur in 2009, is looking to build upon his successes at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.
As a member of the Class of 2011, Mercatoris received the Northeast Conference Menâs Golfer of the Year award.
Connor Jay Gerg, 16, Brookville, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011.
He was born Feb. 14, 1995, in Brookville, and was the much beloved son of Beth (Ammerman) and Thomas Gerg, and brother of Christian Gerg.
He played linebacker and fullback on the Brookville Jr.-Sr. High School football team, and was a member of the Gold All-State All-Academic team for scholastic excellence.
He was also a member of the BAHS and American Legion baseball teams, as well as the Brookville Ski Club.
He worked as a lifeguard at the Brookville YMCA.
Pete Harvath, 76, Ellenboro, N.C., died Thursday, August 18, 2011, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born May 1, 1935, in Indiana County, a son of the late Adam and Mary (Vascovich) Horvath.
He graduated from Clymer High School in 1955, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Harvath worked in manufacturing many years for Greensteel-Korok in Dixonville, and in the coal mining industry for Pennsylvania Power and Light/Greenwich Collieries of Ebensburg.
He was a member of St. Michaelâs Greek Orthodox Catholic Church of Clymer.
BIG RUN â Last Monday, Big Run Borough Council members said residents are again wanting them to hire a part-time police officer to patrol borough streets.
Council president Nick Lantz said one of the reasons residents have approached him is the constant speeding along Route 119 and on borough streets.
Mayor Joe Buterbaugh said there has been discussion with municipalities such as Falls Creek and Sykesville about sharing a part-time officer with Big Run.
