PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Students moving into IUP-Punxsutawneyâ€™s Living-Learning Center today and Friday arenâ€™t the only new faces on campus.
Terry Appolonia began his tenure as the dean at IUP-Punxsy July 25, after serving in various positions at the main campus since 1986. More recently, he served as the dean of students and associate vice-president for student development at the universityâ€™s main campus.
BROOKVILLE â€” The Solid Waste Authority of Jefferson County is hoping to make some headway with local lawmakers in its quest for funding.
Donna Cooper, solid waste/recycling coordinator, wants to schedule a meeting with state Rep. Sam Smith and state Sen. Joe Scarnati to update them on the authorityâ€™s funding status.
Since losing its administrative fee, the authority has been trying to stay afloat.
For 2011 drop-off donations, $11,208 has been committed, and the authority has already received $10,708 of that money. Last year, the authority received only $8,450.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Punxsy's boys' golf team won its second home match of the season with a convincing 165-197 win over Brookville Friday morning at the Punxsutawney Country Club.
The match was played on the front nine holes at the course and was a varsity-only match.
Punxsy's Ian Miller was the low scorer for the tournament, shooting an even-par 37.
Miller had seven pars, bogeyed the par-three seventh and bounced back with a birdie on the par-five eighth.
Well, Devin Mesoraco fans, decision-day is less than a week away for the Cincinnati Reds.
The question remains whether Mesoraco will be called up when the rosters expand Thursday, or will he spend more time with the AAA-affiliate Louisville Bats polishing his game?
One encouraging sign was reported Thursday night by Danny Knobler of cbssports.com: Reds' catcher Ramon Hernandez was placed on waivers Thursday.
Richard Babco, 67, of Logan, Indiana County, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown.
He was born Oct. 14, 1943, in Logan, Banks Township, a son of the late John W. and Elizabeth (Kraynak) Babco.
Aug. 28, 1965, he married Laura Belle Huey, who preceded him in death April 9, 1999.
Mr. Babco was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Glen Campbell.
He worked in the coal strip mining industry doing augering with Andy Freno and then working with the Kraynak Coal Company prior to his employment with Hoffman Diamond Products of Punxsutawney.
