Teamwork is the key to Punxsy's success

August 17, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tennis is a sport that is most often considered an individual one, except in the case of doubles, but Punxsy girls' tennis coach Rose Graffius is using the so-called individual sport to instill lessons about teamwork in her girls this year.

Entering her fourth year as Punxsy's girls' tennis coach, Graffius is optimistic about the way her girls are playing, despite limited practice so far.

Cherie Kopas plans her garden when nothing’s growing

August 17, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Growing up with parents who loved to garden has inspired Cherie Kopas to create her own gardens at her home.
Winning the Punxsy Garden Club’s Garden of the Month award is something Kopas is very proud of, since her mother and father have always loved the hobby as well.

“My parents had a plant shop in Indiana,” she said. “So I was always there helping them water and take care of the plants.”

When Kopas got old enough to move into her own place, she was shocked to see that her soon-to-be home was completely bare on the outside.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When the boys' golf team tees off Friday morning at the Punxsutawney Country Club, the Punxsutawney Area High School's fall sports regular season will officially be underway.

Under the leadership of fourth-year coach Josh Conrad, the Chucks hope to improve from last year when no Punxsy player made it through the first day of districts.

Conrad said his players understand that Punxsy's program has a history of success, and he feels confident they will give their all to make this year a successful one.

The Zak Zone

August 17, 2011

For as long as I can remember, there has been a debate in the sports community, among athletes and fans alike, centered around one important question: What exactly is a sport?

In high school, I knew the question existed, but I also didn't really have to consider the answer too closely. Most of my friends liked and followed the same sports I did, and so there was no room for debate.

Football? Basketball? Hockey? Baseball? There was no debate with those sports. Whether we liked to watch them or not was one question, but we each acknowledged they were all sports.

Big Run firefighters starting to heal after alleged betrayal

August 17, 2011

BIG RUN — While the community of Big Run breathed a sigh of relief, the fire department was left at a loss.

Aug. 10, Punxsy-based Pennsylvania State Police arrested Anthony Overbeck, 18, a former member of the Big Run Volunteer Area Fire Department with arson.

Jefferson County District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett said charges against Overbeck regarding a rash of other arsons in the area are likely forthcoming.

While the arrest may have put residents of the Big Run community at ease, it likely caused much sadness for the members of the fire department.
