July 19th
With heavy hearts, we bid goodbye to father,husband and friend David Paul Mottorn. July 16, 2011, Dave died suddenly, but doing something he loved best, biking along the Freeport-Butler Trail.
Dave was a great lover of nature and a great storyteller. Frequently, these passions came together, when he would spin an entertaining tale along a hiking trail or while dipping his kayak’s oar into the water. He loved singing, too, but his wry mantra, “If you don’t sing good, sing loud,” should be an indicator of his choral abilities.
July 18th
CLEARFIELD — The previously undefeated Punxsy 13- and 14-year old Teener League All-Stars are undefeated no more after a 2-1 loss in eight innings to Clearfield Monday night in Clearfield.
"There was just really good pitching the whole way through," Punxsy coach Doug Byers said. "That pretty much sums up the whole game."
Thomas Summers pitched a complete game for Clearfield, allowing just one run on five hits to earn the win.
Dakota Byers pitched six strong innings for Punxsy, allowing one run on four hits. Byers also struck out six Clearfield hitters.
A few months ago, someone asked me what my dream job would be. I told them that being a sports reporter would be the ideal position for me.
My passion for sports, writing and photography could all be blended together somehow to make the perfect position to fit my talents.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize this truth before I pursued my advanced education, and when I went to college, I studied mathematics and earned a master's in religious studies afterward.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Both construction and demolition continue to move along at a fast pace at the corner of Pine and North Gilpin streets at what is to be known as Grace Place, a senior living facility.
Demolition began Monday on a portion of the former Grube Hospital building. The portion of the building that is adjacent to Pine Street is being razed to make room for Grace Place, a 24-unit housing complex for moderate-income seniors.
The $6.5 million project is being constructed by the Jefferson Area Lutheran Social Ministry and Trek Development.

BROOKVILLE — Punxsutawney Little League took home the 9-and-10 year old bracket championship Saturday at the Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament. It beat Elk County Tool and Die I from St. Marys, 14-4 in four innings, to win the title.
Punxsy's eight-run second inning led it to the victory. Punxsy totaled 14 runs on 18 hits throughout the game.
"That second inning was one of the best innings we've seen all year," Punxsy manager Mark Ewing said. "The boys really came to life with the bats."
BROOKVILLE — The Punxsutawney Bombers went into Saturday's Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament 11-and-12 championship game undefeated, meaning they needed just one victory over Brookville's Team Skittlez to secure the trophy.
It took only four innings to finish off Team Skittlez, 21-7, before the Bombers swarmed the field in celebration.
Dylan Huey led Punxsy's offense, going 3-for-5 at bat, scoring twice and recording three RBIs. He hit two doubles and a single.
ROSSITER — The Rossiter Miners topped the Brookville Grays, 1-0, Sunday in game one of the second round of the Federation League playoffs.
The Miners notched the second-seed in the league, guaranteeing themselves home-field advantage in their second round against the Grays.
The round is a best-of-seven series format, with the next game being played in Brookville Tuesday.
Both teams received a first-round bye.
The Miners recorded one run on just three hits throughout the ball game, but that, combined with impressive defense and pitching, was enough to win them the ball game.
PUNXSUTAWNEY – Some people groan about hitting the big 4-0, but Kevin Aul has scratched and clawed for 32 years of his life to hit it.
Aul – relaying with the Grace Gigglers of Grace United Methodist Church — was among those taking part in Punxsy's Relay for Life Saturday in Barclay Square.
The Relay for Life committee recognized Aul's 40th birthday with a park-wide sing-along of “Happy Birthday” and saluted him for his battle against cancer – which he has been waging for most of his life.
