St. Marys tops Punxsy behind late surge

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy scored two runs in the bottom half of the third inning to tie St. Marys, 2-2, but St. Marys went on to score eight runs in the last three innings to win 10-4 in Minor League baseball All-Star action Sunday at Jerry Long Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy's next game will be Thursday, but it will not know which team it will play until Tuesday. St. Marys will go on to face DuBois in the winner's bracket at 6 p.m. Tuesday in DuBois.

Punxsy takes home victory in American Legion, 14-4

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney reigned victorious as they beat the Clearfield Chiefs 14-4 Sunday night in American Legion ball.

A seven-run first inning proved to be just the ticket for Punxsy, as the Chiefs were unable to stage any sort of comeback.

"We jumped out quick in the first inning, and we kinda never looked back after that," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "It was a good win for us. We were patient when we needed to be patient, and we were aggressive when we needed to be aggressive."

DuBois wins 11-0, drops Punxsy to losers' bracket

DUBOIS — The Punxsy Little League softball All-Stars had just two base runners during an 11-0 loss to DuBois Saturday in a winners' bracket contest in DuBois.

Punxsy (1-1) dropped to the losers' bracket final where it will host Brookville at 6 p.m. tonight.

Brookville defeated St. Marys, 10-7, Sunday afternoon.

DuBois (3-0) is now the king seed in the Southern tier. It will host the Punxsy-Brookville winner at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a chance to advance to the District 10 final against the Northern tier champion.

Regional PEER day honors seniors

BROOKVILLE — Pennsylvania's Empowered Expert Residents (PEERs) are honored annually at a statewide event in Harrisburg for their efforts in advocating for their own quality of life in long-term living facilities.
However, because of the travel distance, PEERs from the northwest region of the state convened at the Heritage House Thursday.

Veteran's park vandalized in Big Run

BIG RUN — Police are looking for information regarding vandalism that occurred over the weekend at Veteran's Memorial Park in Big Run.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, sometime between 9 p.m. Friday and 5:20 p.m. Saturday, someone spray painted graffiti on the playground; removed one of the electrical outlet covers from the pavilion; and damaged a picnic table by removing a wooden plank and breaking it into pieces.

Damage to the park is estimated at $200, with the electrical outlet valued at $10.

R. Margaret (Peg) Elkin, 91

R. Margaret (Peg) Elkin, 91, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Porter Township, a daughter of the late Edward A. and Bertha Mae (Blose) Kennedy.

June 12, 1941, she married John M. Elkin, who preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1991.

Mrs. Elkin was a former member of the Zion Methodist Church in Porter, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of United Commercial Travelers, the Nash Ramblers bowling team, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Adrian Hospital and the 500 Card Club.

Glenn L. Leasure, 81

Glenn L. Leasure, 81, Brookville, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born Feb. 16,1930, a son of the late Everett J. and Margaret (Wise) Leasure.

Mr. Leasure was a mechanic at General Electric. He was also employed at Sam Jack Drilling and Fairman Drilling.

Protestant in faith, Mr. Leasure attended the Albion EUB Church.
He loved spending time with his family and friends, his cats, his bunnies and working with his hands, especially doing mechanical work.

Nancy J. Neale, 53

June 27, 2011

Nancy J. Neale, 53, Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born July 5, 1957, in New Martinsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Albert and Lula (Slater) Summers.

Sept. 6, 1986, she married Jack E. Neale, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mrs. Neale loved reading and especially loved her cats.

She was a loving wife who will be greatly missed.

Calvin Dick Yount, 82

June 27, 2011

Calvin Dick Yount, 82, Valier, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

He was born May 6, 1929, in Ramseytown, a son of the late Charles Marvin and J. Ruth (Dinger) Yount.

March 20, 1953, he married Doris J. (Brosius) Yount, who survives.
Mr. Yount was a member of the Punxsutawney chapters of the VFW, the American Legion, the Army-Navy Club and the Loyal Order of Moose.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of second lieutenant with the Pennsylvania National Guard.

When it comes to children riding in cars, safety always comes first.
