DA takes further step against synthetic drugs

BROOKVILLE — A week after Punxsutawney Borough Council sought to halt possible sales of bath salts and synthetic marijuana in the borough, District Attorney Jeff Burkett reported that he filed a civil action Monday, asking for an injunction banning the sale and possession of various forms of synthetic drugs that are sprouting up all over Pennsylvania.

According to Burkett, the Senate passed a bill June 15 that banned a number of different drugs, including synthetic marijuana and bath salts.
Gov. Tom Corbett signed the bill Thursday, but it will not go into effect for another 60 days.

PennDOT reveals plans for Harmony bridges

HARMONY — PennDOT held a public meeting at the Elk Run fire hall Wednesday to display plans for the proposed replacement of Harmony bridges No. 1 and No. 2, Route 310, in Young Township.

Ray Smith, PennDOT project manager, said the first bridge will be replaced with a concrete bridge, and the second will be replaced with a galvanized box culvert.

Smith said the bridge project is supposed to be bid in December, with construction to begin in April. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2012.

PTAG's performance of "The Skin of Our Teeth" opens tonight

When one of the characters in “The Skin of Our Teeth” decides she doesn’t like the situation that is unfolding, she brings the scene to a halt much to the dismay of those around her. Audiences will learn what happens next when they attend a performance of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning satiric fantasy that opens at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the auditorium of Punxsutawney Area Middle School. The Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild will stage the show again at 2 p.m. Sunday, and it will continue next week with nightly performances at 7:30 p.m. June 30, July 1 and 2.

Ishman throws one-hitter, Punxsy advances with 15-0 victory

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Alli Ishman was on point all game long, and the Punxsy Little League softball All-Stars cruised to a tournament-opening 15-0 victory in four innings over Brockway Thursday night at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.

Ishman was dominant, striking out the first five batters she faced and throwing a one-hitter. Ishman was one out away from a no-hitter when Anndi Bartlett hit a liner in the hole that glanced off a reaching Punxsy third baseman Brayden Woodrow. Ishman then retired Savannah Terwilliger to end the game.

Punxsy's Devon Luzell (12) and Zak Dickey will compete in the 27th-annual Lezzer Lumber Football Classic at 7 p.m. tonight at Bald Eagle Area Alumni Field in Wingate. Punxsy's Ben Blazavich was also selected to play in the game, but is unable to attend due to a prior engagement.

Joseph C. "Joe" Woodarek, 68

Joseph C. "Joe" Woodarek, 68, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Woodarek was born July 4, 1942, in Salamanca, N.Y., a son of the late Carl and Vanadene (Shields) Woodarek.

He was married to Elizabeth J. (Colgan) Woodarek, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Woodarek was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired employee from the CSX Railroad, where he worked as a conductor.

He was a member of the Punxsutawney American Legion Post 62 and the Punxsutawney F.O.E. 1231.
