PUNXSUTAWNEY — For anyone who thinks there’s no a difference between fighting wildfires and structure fires, just ask Punxsutawney Fire Department Chief Paul Hense, who will conclude his tenure as chief at the end of the year.
Hense, who works full-time for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Bureau of Forestry, recently returned from battling wildfires in Texas.
He said he was never scared while battling the blazes, but he was concerned.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council has been approved to receive a $400,000 H2O grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for the South Main Street sewer project.
Monday, borough engineer Brian Sekula, of The the EADS Group, said the total cost for the project is $795,500.
Sekula said in discussions with DCED, the $400,000 could be switched to the West Mahoning Street project, and the borough could receive money for a reduced project for South Main Street.
HOMER CITY — The Federation League All-Stars will take on the All-Stars from the Indiana County League 7 p.m. tonight at First Commonwealth Field in Homer City. Both leagues have selected standout players from each of the teams, nominated and voted upon by each leagues’ players.
All of the proceeds will go to Pennsylvania Junior Legion Baseball regional and state tournaments, which will also be held at First Commonwealth Field.
Punxsutawney's Devin Mesoraco struggled Friday night against the Toledo Mud Hens. Mesoraco, who plays for the Class AAA minor league team, the Louisville Bats, has become known as one of the heavy hitters in the International League.
Mesoraco, the 2007 first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, had a tough night Friday as he went 0-for-3 from the plate, but he was struck out just once.
During the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied at one, Mesoraco was intentionally walked by relief pitcher Matt Hoffman, negating that chance at bat.
