Little League (11- & 12-year-olds)
BROOKVILLE â This week, the Jefferson County Commissioners said eliminating the positions of jury commissioner would save the county $12,000.
âTwelve-thousand dollars â that is the savings. That, in and of itself, is enough for me,â commissioner Jim McIntyre said.
The elimination of this position is a statewide movement proposed a few years ago. It has passed in the state House of Representatives and is now in the state Senate.
County Commission Chairman Paul Corbin called the position a âduplication of services.â
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The kickoff of the first-ever âThird Thursdayâ Festival sponsored by PRIDE began Thursday night, but the weather had something to say about it. But despite the downpour of rain throughout the day, it did not stop local community members and downtown Punxsy businesses from coming out and supporting the event.
Participating businesses offered free hors dâoeuvres, desserts and drinks. Most businesses even promoted a sale on merchandise.
The next âThird Thursdayâ Festival will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21, with all festivities being held on Mahoning Street.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â For its summer show, the Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild Inc. offers a unique production that alternately arouses thought, laughter and a variety of emotions.
Thornton Wilderâs âThe Skin of Our Teethâ will be staged at 7:30 p.m. June 24, 25, 30, July 1 and 2 at the auditorium at Punxsutawney Area Middle School. A matinee has been set for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26. The busy troupe will then move to the Verna Leith Sawmill Theater in Cook Forest where shows will be presented at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, July 6-9.
Bridgeport, Conn., died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Presbyterian Columbian Hospital, New York, N.Y.
He was born Oct. 12, 1936, in Iselin, to Michael and Mary (Poycock) Knopick.
Mr. Knopick was a veteran of the U.S. Army, an avid golfer and a gourmet cook. He also volunteered at the Thomas Merton Center for Homeless Men.
Mr. Knopick was a claims adjuster with Allstate insurance.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Frances Albecht and husband Paul and Geraldine Poydence; a brother, Robert Knopick and wife Dorothy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
BROOKVILLE â It was a difficult day for the Brookville Grays, as they struggled against the Rossiter Miners before eventually losing Wednesday night in Federation League play.
Brookville fell behind 5-0 in the third inning before it attempted to stage a comeback. The Grays were able to cut the lead to two with a strong third, but it proved to be not enough.
The Miners went on to win it 6-4, improving their record to 5-5, while Brookville fell to 6-4.
Brookville manager Bob McCullough said the Grays' six-day break affected his team.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Tom Poore was convinced that the 1944 Punxsutawney High School class ring that his father found near West Palm Beach, Fla., in the early 1970s belonged to Blair Richards.
The only person who wasnât convinced that the ring was his, was Blair Richards.
âI thought it was a scam,â Richards said Wednesday evening, just a few hours after Poore drove all the way from Roseland, Fla., to return the ring to him. âHe called me a year ago, and I didnât believe him.â
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsutawney Borough Council discussed the proposed Sawmill Run bridge replacement Monday, with a consensus that closing areas of West Mahoning Street completely for three months was a better option than dealing with 10 temporary traffic signals for nine months.
Public Works Chairman Roger Steele said the bridge replacement will take place during the 2012 construction season.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â With a newly-renovated childrenâs section, the Punxsutawney Memorial Library is ready to begin its summer reading program this week.
Through the efforts of Director Coral Ellshoff, new furniture has replaced disintegrating items that had been used in the library since the early 1970s.
âThe older furniture was original to the library when it was built in 1974,â she said. âIt had served us really well, but it had started to show its age because this is a really well-used area of the library.â
