DUBOIS â DuBois scored 11 runs on seven hits in the fifth inning, and Riley Assalone allowed only four hits to defeat Punxsy, 17-5 in five innings Wednesday, and advanced to the District 10 Little League softball All-Stars final against the winner of tonight's Ridgway/Bradford game.
Punxsy had three errors in the fifth inning and could have gotten out of the high-scoring inning much earlier, but DuBois took advantage of the errors with three hits and aggressive base running.
RIDGWAY â Punxsy scored 11 of its 13 runs during its final three at-bats to defeat Ridgway, 13-9, to move on to the winners' bracket final in Little League baseball All-Star action Wednesday night in Ridgway.
With the win, Punxsy advances to the winners' bracket final where it will play at 4 p.m. Sunday at DuBois. Ridgway falls to the losers' bracket where it will travel to Reynoldsville/Sykesville for a game Friday. Punxsy committed a number of errors in the game, but it still held on for the four-run victory.
BROOKVILLE â The Brookville Minor League softball All-Stars was taken down by DuBois, 11-8, in a competitive game Wednesday night in Brookville.
Brookville came back from a five-run deficit to tie it at eight in the fourth, but DuBois added three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth.
"I was real impressed with the way we fought," Brookville manager Carl McManigle said. "We never got down; we kept fighting, and I think the final score shows that."
James Richard Pifer, 90, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Merle Philip and Ida Elizabeth (Smith) Pifer.Â
He is the last member of his family.
Mr. Pifer was a corporal with the U.S. Army Air Force, having served during World War II. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Nov. 15, 1946, he married Doris Ruth Bair, who survives.
Lloyd F. Stover, 90, DuBois, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born May 25, 1921, in Luthersburg, a son of the late J. Frank and Iva (Marshall) Stover.
Oct. 1, 1949, he married June (Gillung) Stover, who preceded him in death Dec. 18, 1997.
Mr. Stover graduated from Luthersburg High School and joined the U.S. Army Air Force, in which he served during World War II.
He was employed with Rockwell Manufacturing as an electrician until he retired in 1983.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Wednesday is considered the best day during the annual Old Home Week Carnival by members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department and employees of J&J Amusements, as youngsters and adults from the Arc of Jefferson County Camp Friendship visited for fun and lunch.
Campers from Camp Friendship near Reynoldsville were invited to ride the carnival rides for free, and members of the fire department served campers, parents and counselors a free lunch.
Ranee Sikora, director of the Punxsutawney Camp Friendship, said the campers enjoyed the carnival as much as any day of camp.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Punxsutawney Area School Board approved its $38.7 million general fund budget â with no tax increase â for the 2011-12 school year at Wednesdayâs board meeting.
The budget was passed 6-0, with board members Lesa Conner, Penny Pierce and Penny Pifer excused from the meeting.
The $38,713,742 will be funded by the $5 per capita school laws section 679; $5 per capita Act 51; one percent Earned Income Tax Act 511; 600 mills Occupational Assessment Tax Act 511; and a one-percent real estate transfer Tax Act 511.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The John J. Fisher Post 62 Punxsy American Legion team scored 10 of its 11 runs in the first two innings and held off a late rally by DuBois to win, 11-10, Tuesday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy's offensive outburst was just what manager Mike Dickey wanted to see from his team with the playoffs just around the corner.
"Hitting from top to bottom, that was refreshing to see," Dickey said. "Of course, we know they're not throwing the guys they will in the playoffs, but regardless, it gives us some confidence."
