Donald Joseph DeSandro, 84

May 18, 2011

Donald Joseph DeSandro, 84, Sun City West, Ariz., passed away peacefully with his wife, Ann, and son Brad at his side May 4, 2011, at the Hospice of the Valley after an extended and valiant battle with COPD.

He was born May 29, 1926, the eldest of four children born to Elmer and Dora (Test) DeSandro.

Upon graduating from Punxsutawney Area High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in Penn State University and graduated in 1950 with an industrial engineering degree. He then served as an officer in the Air Force Reserves.

Lisa (Noerr) Rivera, 33

Lisa (Noerr) Rivera, 33, Kearneysville, W.Va., formerly of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.

She was born Aug. 10, 1977, a daughter of Harry E. and Carol (Stahlman) Noerr, who survive, of Punxsutawney.

May 5, 2006, she married Daniel R. Rivera, who survives.

She was an elementary school teacher at the Prince William County School District in Virginia.

Rose (Hetrick) Zimmerman, 88

Rose (Hetrick) Zimmerman, 88, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

Skerkavich to play at national-ranked JuCo Frederick CC

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney's Tyler Skerkavich is moving from one successful baseball program to another, as the senior will attend Frederick Community College in Maryland to play for the Cougars, who were recently ranked the No. 1 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II school in the nation.

The Cougars, who finished the season with a 43-7 record and a No. 10 ranking in the national poll, were ranked in the top 20 in the nation over the past 13 years. That includes five trips to the NJCAA Division II World Series and one trip to the national title game in 2002.

Officials preview Sawmill Run bridge project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough and school district officials heard PennDOT’s plans for replacing Sawmill Run bridge on Route 36 (West Mahoning Street) at a public meeting Wednesday in council chambers.

Bob Kozlenchar, Gannett & Fleming project manager for the bridge replacement, said the replacement of the bridge will not occur until the 2013 construction season.

Rotary salutes Shana Maines as top vocational student

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During its meeting Wednesday at Mary’s Place, the Punxsutawney Rotary Club named Shana Maines, daughter of Samuel and Virginia Maines of Big Run, as the recipient of the Glenn M. Means Outstanding Vocational Student Award.

A member of the Jeff Tech Class of 2011, Maines participated in the Career and Technical Student Organization; the National Technical Honor Society; the National Society for High School Scholars; the Cosmetology Shop; Dance Committee and Colorguard.
