Restored fees remain the key target for waste authority

BROOKVILLE — Last week, the Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority discussed possible contracts with private waste haulers that could balance the operating budget.

Despite that possibility, persuading the state legislature to reinstate administration fees is still the No. 1 priority for the authority.

The administration fee would provided the authority with a payment — typically between $2 and $4 — for each ton of waste collected. The authority operated in a fiscally-healthy way until the administration fee was removed pending a court case.

Overtime opener highlights Day Two of tourney

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Day Two of the Punxsutawney elementary boys' basketball tournament featured a trio of tight conclusions, including a low-scoring overtime match-up that led off Tuesday night's festivities.

Syracuse 11, Michigan 8, OT

In the first of three fourth- and fifth-grade games Tuesday, four Syracuse players scored during the Orangemen's 11-8 overtime victory over Michigan.

Ethan Blose scored a team-best four points, Willie Hoover had three points, and both Caden Barrick and Zach Pape managed two points for Syracuse (1-1).

Chucks win final six games, complete 16-4 year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade boys' basketball team closed the season on a six-game winning streak following a 44-23 victory over Bradford Feb. 18 to complete a 16-4 season.

Punxsy struggled during the first quarter and fell behind 7-1 entering the second. But the Chucks outscored the Owls 43-16 during the final three quarters to earn the win.

Kevin Hughes scored a team-best 10 points, and Brandon Mancuso and Matt Burkett both added six points.

Thressa Ann Guinen, 56

Thressa Ann Guinen, 56, Big Run, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at home.

 She was born April 3, 1955, in DuBois, a daughter of Joseph and Clara (Perkowski) Agnello, who survive, of Anita.

 Ms. Guinen loved shopping at Goodwill, yard sales and garage sales. She enjoyed helping others and had previously worked as a caregiver.

 On her roughest day, she always made people laugh, and she dearly loved her children and grandchildren.
