GOODYEAR, Ariz. â When Punxsy native Devin Mesoraco hit an eighth-inning home run during the first week of spring training with the Cincinnati Reds March 2, manager Dusty Baker said that the slugger hit the ball a mile, a mile-and-a-half.
The home run broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Reds a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox.
The lengthy blast was the first of many impressive spring training cuts from Mesoraco, who is primed to make the jump to the majors for the first time this season.

Many would expect the doctors employed at Punxsutawney Area Hospital to be from western Pennsylvania.
However, as Dan Blough, hospital CEO, noted, using a map arrayed with push pins, the doctors are from various parts of the world, showing much diversity at the local hospital.
Red push-pins on the map depicted where each doctor was born, while blue pins displayed the medical schools they attended.
Lloyd G. Williams, 96, Johnstown, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Arbutus Park Manor, Johnstown.
He was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Spangler, a son of George S. and Bertha (Breth) Williams.
Nov. 5, 1939, he married Lucille E. Worrell, who preceded him in death Nov. 24, 1994.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in Southeast Asia Theatre.
Mr. Williams was a member of St. Davidâs Evangelical Lutheran Church of Davidsville, as well as the Punxsutawney B.P.O. Elks No. 301, the American Legion and the VFW.
