PUNXSUTAWNEY â Once Bradford switched to the triangle-and-two defense during Thursday night's District IX Class AAA Boys' Basketball Playoff Semifinal, the complexion of the game completely changed.
Defense put the Owls (7-16) in position to win their ninth district title in 11 years with a 41-38 overtime victory over Punxsutawney.
Top-seeded St. Marys beat Clearfield in the other semifinal, 50-23, and will meet Bradford in the title game â most likely Saturday, March 5, at Clarion University.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Juniors Seth Spack and Nathan McGregor will enter the District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University as two of Punxsy's top-seeded middleweights.
Spack (25-5), who won the district title at 112 pounds last year and reached states after a runner-up finish at regionals, enters Saturday with his first-ever top-seeding. The grappler leads a 135-pound weight class that has three participants with 20-plus victories this season.
CLARION â The Brookville boys' basketball team won the same way it has all season during its District IX Class AA semifinal playoff win over Brockway Thursday night at Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University.
The top-seeded Raiders (21-2) used timely shooting and tough defense to grind out a 49-41 win over the fourth-seeded Rovers. Brookville limited Brockway to three points in the fourth quarter.
BROOKVILLE â The Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority has looked toward the state legislature for solutions to funding issues for the past several years. Now, it appears a different answer may be playing out in Clearfield County.
The authority has been losing funds since an administration fee was removed following a court case. This year, the authority needed more than $20,000 from reserve accounts to balance the operating budget. Each year, the authority asks the state to renew the administration fee, but no action has been taken.
BROOKVILLE â The Jefferson County Commissioners Tuesday addressed changes to tax notices this year.
Commission Chairman Paul Corbin said changes to the tax notice have caused some confusion among residents.
He said the new tax notices are only a single page rather than two, and they are mailed directly to taxpayersâ homes.
âThe envelopes say, very noticeably, âImportant tax information enclosed,ââ Corbin said, adding that two tax notices will be sent out, one for property tax and one for occupational tax.
Kathleen Ann "Kass" Deyarmin, 44, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at UPMC-Mercy in Pittsburgh.
She was born Sept. 20, 1966, in Warren, Ohio, a daughter of Richard W. Deyarmin of Cherry Tree and Kathryn (Rafferty) Deyarmin of Youngsville, who survive.
Miss Deyarmin was a devoted animal lover. This love of all animals led her to rescue as many as she could. In addition to many interests, she was always an avid reader.
Vera L. Smith, 82, Indiana, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
She was born June 7, 1928, a daughter of the late Homer C. and Vera States Smith.
Ms. Smith was a 1946 graduate of Homer City High School and a 1952 graduate of Nyack Training Institute, (now Nyack College) of Nyack, N. Y.
She worked in New York City from 1952 to 1960, was a member of the Indiana Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and retired from Indiana Hospital.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â Three-time champion Kody Young and a trio of underclassmen embody Punxsy's lightest four weight classes entering District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University.
Young, a senior, will compete for a fourth district crown, while three other Chucks â sophomore Devan Snyder and freshmen Josh Schuckers and Joel Bowers â will compete in the varsity tournament for the first time.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The second half of the Punxsy boys' basketball team's last trip to the District IX Class AAA playoffs was disastrous.
The Chucks were outscored 46-19 during the final two quarters of a 74-42 loss to St. Marys Feb. 24, 2009, after they trailed 28-23 at halftime.
BROOKVILLE â The Brookville boys' basketball team is ready to get back to business after having a longer than expected break from basketball.
After having eight days off since clinching a share of the District IX League title last Wednesday, the top-seeded Raiders (20-2, 8-2 District IX League) will play fourth-seeded Brockway (12-10, 2-4 AML South) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the semifinals of the District IX Class AA playoffs at Clarion University
Brookville beat Brockway twice this season, a 57-42 win to open the season Dec. 10 and a 67-53 win Dec. 30.
