THE WAIT IS NEARLY OVER: WINTER SPORTS KICK OFF FRIDAY

Shortly after the junior high wrestlers kick off their season, the ninth-grade basketball team opens its season Friday afternoon. Another first: Bodenhorn bags a buck

Local youngster Caleb Bodenhorn, of Punxsutawney, nabbed this high-and-wide spike, his first buck, Saturday while hunting in Bell Township. The buck weighed in at 160 pounds.

Look for more Margiotti detours next summer

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Margiotti Bridge — and those who travel it — will again see maintenance by PennDOT crews this coming summer.

PennDOT District 10 has scheduled rehabilitation for the bridge during the upcoming summer driving season, said Borough Manager Ben White, during Tuesday’s Public Works Committee meeting.

White said PennDOT has scheduled the bridge construction for next summer with a detour for northbound traffic to travel down Indiana Hill; southbound traffic reduced to one lane of the bridge; and pedestrian traffic being maintained.

Smith, Aging Service warn seniors about possible scam

INDIANA — Both the Indiana County Aging Services Inc. and state Rep. Sam Smith are warning local seniors about a scam in which some people are being led to believe they must pay to file a claim that in fact is free of charge.

“Each year, thousands of Pennsylvania’s senior citizens benefit from the rebates they receive through the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program,” Smith said in a statement.

He reminds area seniors through his 66th District — which includes Jefferson, Indiana and Armstrong counties — that it is not necessary to pay a private entity to fill out an application.

Pedestrian treated for injuries after accidental strike

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A pedestrian who was accidentally struck by a vehicle at 5 p.m. Tuesday while walking through the Groundhog Plaza parking lot was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

According to Punxsy Borough Police, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up driven by Gregory Forrest, 20, Punxsutawney, accidentally struck Amy Trithart, 36, Reynoldsville, while she was walking through the parking lot.
Police said that Trithart was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital by Jefferson County EMS for treatment of unknown injuries.

Josephine Shema, 78,

Josephine Shema, 78, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born April 11, 1933, in DeLancey, a daughter of the late John and Helen (Shutyak) Shema Sr.

Ms. Shema was a retired loan officer with S&T Bank with more than 30 years of service. She was also a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church.

Surviving relatives include a niece, Linda Wadell; and three nephews, Larry Shema, William Shema and Andy Shema.

Robert Dale Shick, 90

Robert Dale Shick, 90, Punxsutawney, formerly of Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at Nelson’s Golden Years.

He was born June 23, 1921, in Allens Mills, a son of the late Elmer Jesse and Ruth Naomi (Copen) Shick.

Jan. 7, 1951, he married Kathleen “Kay” Taylor Hoover Shick, who preceded him in death July 28, 1997.

Mr. Shick was a former employee of Jackson China, where he was a foreman for 10 years. He also was a retired, self-employed home builder and a life member of First United Methodist Church.

Emhoff lands six-point

Chandler Emhoff, 13, of Worthville, harvested this 150-pound, six-point buck at 4:30 p.m. last Monday while hunting near Lantz's Bottom.

Lingenfelter bags her first buck

Kylee Lingenfelter, 11, of Punxsutawney, shot her first buck — a 140-pound seven-point — Saturday at 8 a.m. while hunting in the Ringgold area.
