6th-graders finish undefeated; 5th not far behind

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The SS.C.D. elementary basketball program's sixth-grade team finished its season with an undefeated 26-0 record with three wins at the sixth-grade tournament at DuBois Central Catholic over the weekend in DuBois.

The final game "was a nail-biter," according to elementary basketball director Kurt Nestel. SS.C.D. held on for a 13-12 victory over Elk County Christian to clinch the undefeated season.

During the perfect season, SS.C.D. also earned the championship at the ECC Tourna-ment.

Esposito scores four, Raiders fall in semis

DUBOIS — Halloween turned out to be a scary night for the Brookville Raiders as they fell 5-1 to the Brockway Rovers in the Distrist IX Class A soccer semi-finals.

With the loss, the Raiders season ended on a disappointing note, but Brookville head coach Dan Smith said he was pleased with how the team played throughout the playoffs.

"We would've liked to have gone a little further up the bracket, but we're happy," Smith said. "We're proud of the boys, with the effort they put up through the bracket. They gave it a nice run."

Truck hauling oil, antifreeze flips onto trail

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The driver of a box truck hauling petroleum products lost control at approximately 2:35 p.m. Monday while traveling north on Indiana Hill (Route 119) and crashed into the guardrail on the bridge, which caused the truck to flip over and land on the Mahoning Shadow Trail below.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, the truck was driven by Gerald Luchini, Weedville, for Windward Petroleum of Ridgway and was carrying barrels filled with oil and antifreeze, which spilled into a small stream that flows into the Mahoning Creek.

Maxine L. Fike, 83

Maxine L. Fike, 83, Punxsutawney, formerly of Coolspring, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Wellington Heights.

She was born Oct. 8, 1928, in Hawthorne, a daughter of the late Richard P. and Blanche C. (Radaker) Hartzell.

She married Percy L. Fike, who preceded her in death Sept. 16, 2009.
Surviving relatives include two brothers, Richard F. Hartzell and wife Donna of Linesville, and Robert L. Hartzell and wife Dee of Oxford, Fla.; and two sisters, Wilda L. Prince and husband Hugh of Albany, Ga., and Pauline A. Wilson and husband Tom of Pulaski.

Jean M. Greenlee, 80

Jean M. Greenlee, 80, passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy Anna (Icher) McKain.

She married Ralph Edgar Greenlee, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Greenlee was a member of Barton Chapel Church.

She enjoyed crocheting, playing piano and camping.

Pearl M. Grove, 83

Pearl M. Grove, 83, Rossiter, formerly of Allegany, N.Y., died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at home.

She was born Dec. 12, 1927, in Creekside, a daughter of the late Gaskell and Gladys (Leksell) Travis.

Jan. 9, 1947, she married Robert J. Grove, who preceded her in death March 6, 1998.

Mrs. Grove was a member of the Presbyterian Church, which she cleaned for many years, in Rossiter.

Harry R. Hibbard, 70

Harry R. Hibbard, 70, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at his home.

He was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Harry E. and Martha (Kovalyak) Hibbard.

He married Leila (Smith) Hibbard, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Hibbard was an equipment operator for the Borough of Punxsutawney. He was also a former Punxsutawney police officer.

Team places second, two Chucks move on

RIDGWAY — The Punxsutawney boys' cross country was upset by St. Marys Saturday at the District IX Cross Country Championships in Ridgway. Punxsy attempted to challenge for the district title, but it ended up taking the runner-up position after falling to the Flying Dutch.

The AAA boys had to deal with seriously muddy conditions as they were the final runners on the Ridgway course at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.

Bradford thwarts Punxsy, 3 Lady Chucks advance

RIDGWAY — The Punxsy girls cross country staged a valiant effort under miserable conditions Saturday at the District 9 Championships in Ridgway, falling just six points short of an upset as they placed second overall to team champion Bradford.

Punxsy finished with 38 points behind Bradford’s 32 but well ahead of DuBois’ total of 67. Clearfield placed fourth with 83 points.

Man, 70, dies in fire

MCCALMONT TOWNSHIP — A McCalmont Township man lost his life Sunday in a fire that spread quickly and severely damaged his home at 3498 Graffius Avenue Extension.

Harry L. Hibbard, 70, McCalmont Township, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder.

Snyder said Hibbard died due to smoke inhalation.

According to McCalmont Township Fire Chief Orrie Manners, the home was fully involved when he arrived on scene, and there had been a fatality.
The man was unable to escape the flames, and firefighters were unable to reach him in time.
