The Zak Zone

October 5, 2011

Today marks the beginning of a very important season to me: Hockey season.

Although, I will admit that last week's chilly temperatures and rain/snowy mix came a little too early, it's never too early for hockey season to begin.

Hockey is a special sport for me as I grew up playing the indoor version on roller skates.

Yes, I said roller skates, not those silly in-lines that came along much later, but good old-fashioned roller skates.

The majority of my free time, and the majority of my parents' vacation funds, was poured into this hobby.

Firefighters have also received training sessions on the new apparatus.

Voter registration deadline is Tuesday

BROOKVILLE — If you want to vote in the Nov. 8 general election, but you’re not currently registered, you have only until Tuesday to do so.

In order to vote in any election, you must first be a registered voter. If you’re not, you need to register by Tuesday, according to Karen Lupone, chief clerk for Jefferson County.

How do you know if you need to register?

Lupone said if you are a first-time voter, have recently moved to a different area or changed your name, you may need to register — or re-register — to vote.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tuesday, Punxsutawney Borough Council’s Public Safety Committee received requests for two separate nights of trick-or-treating, one from East End residents and another from the Punxsutawney Fire Department.

Jaime Sherry, of Highland Avenue, requested council approve a request from East End residents to hold its own separate trick-or-treat from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

Sherry said people in that area of town do a lot of extra things that make the event better on Saturday than during the week.

Young Township hopes cameras, new recycling site will deter illegal dumping

October 5, 2011

WALSTON — At last, the recycling bins formerly located at Walston Community Park have moved to the Young Township Municipal building, Walston Road.

Township Supervisor Andrew Meterko said the main reason the recycling bins were moved was due to the lack of security at the playground location.

“We won’t have to go up and gather all the garbage that people brought to the old recycling location at the park,” he said. Township workers regularly picked up a variety of items from the former site, including televisions, mattresses and garbage.
