From the man who brought you âSquare Root Day,â Ron Gordon is back to promote âStory Day,â and the story must begin, âOnes Upon a Day.â
Gordon, a teacher in the Sequoia-Union School District in Redwood City, Calif., first brought Square Root Day to the attention of Spirit readers and others around the country during Groundhog Day 2004 â 02.02.04, two is the square root of four.
The last Square Root Day was March 3, 2009 â 03.03.09, three is the square root of nine â and the next Square Root Day will be April 4, 2016 â 04.04.16, four is the square root of 16.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Punxsy wrestling team proved it is a squad that has more than one talented grappler Thursday night with a 51-21 victory over Curwensville in its first home match of the season.
The Chucks (6-6) fell behind 15-6 following the first-ever home loss of senior Kody Young before rallying off five-straight victories that carried into the decisive win.
Young (9-1), who was competing in his first home match since breaking the school record in career victories Dec. 28, 2010, was up against Curwensville's best wrestler in junior Jake Keller.
BROOKVILLE â Turnovers in crucial situations have crept up on the Punxsy girls' basketball team all season, and Thursday's game in Brookville was no different.
The Lady Chucks (3-7, 0-2 District IX League) were ahead by four points at halftime only to give the ball away too many times during a 40-33 loss to Brookville.
"They came out in the third quarter and turned up the heat defensively, and we didn't handle it very well," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said. "Their defense created some turnovers for them, they got up eight points, and we just couldn't bring it down."
BROOKVILLE â The Jefferson County Sheriffâs office recently concluded a busy year which saw the addition of TASERs to the weapons used by the deputies.
Sheriff Carl Gotwald Sr. said through grants, he was able to purchase TASERs for the deputies to have a more effective means of securing offenders by a less lethal option, âby helping to bring the deputies home safely to their families and friends and the offender into custody unharmed.â
TASERs for deputies have deterred hostility because offenders know the outcome.
