Plenty of pins for Chucks in 57-45 win

December 21, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior-high wrestling team surrendered four forfeits Monday, but overcame the deficit and earned an impressive 57-45 victory over Altoona at home.

"We were pretty pleased with our performance on the mats. Obviously, to win this one after giving up a total of four forfeits is a big win," Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said. "Not that we still don't have room for improvement in many areas, but we're definitely happy with the final outcome, and we saw a lot of nice things out there. We looked rather aggressive and ready to wrestling."

December 21, 2010

HARRISBURG — Area code 582 is coming soon to a phone near you.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility said 582 will be the new area code for much of northwestern Pennsylvania starting in 2012, The Associated Press said.

Last week, the commission approved a plan to divide the 814 area code. The change will affect Erie, Crawford, Warren, Venango, Forest, Clarion, Jefferson, Elk and McKean counties.

Parts of Clearfield, Armstrong, Mercer and Indiana counties will also get the new area code, AP said.

The commission said Tuesday the new code is expected to take effect Feb. 1, 2012.

Jail Board agrees on further restraints for inmates during the booking process

December 21, 2010

BROOKVILLE — The killing of a corrections officer in Crawford County two months ago prompted the Jefferson County Jail Board to approve a change in policy Monday.

According to Jefferson County Warden Tom Elbel, the Crawford County officer was killed while booking an incoming prisoner, who was unrestrained and attacked the officer without the use of a weapon.

To avoid such a disaster, Elbel and the jail board moved to install bull rings, to which the prisoner will be fastened during booking.

A change in policy Monday made it mandatory for the bull rings to be used.

Reitz's record-tying game carries Lady Chucks to first victory

December 20, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior guard Jenna Reitz tied the school record with seven three-pointers, and the Punxsy girls' basketball team notched its first victory of the season Monday night over Clearfield, 57-48.

Punxsy trailed 20-19 at halftime before scoring 38 second-half points and improving to 1-4 on the season.

"In the second half, they played really hard, and they executed a lot better on the offensive end," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said about his team. "They moved the ball, they got better looks, and when you get better looks, it's easier to shoot the ball."

Four big wins help Lady Chucks improve to 5-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team has definitely hit its stride, as the Lady Chucks won their fifth-straight game with a 59-3 victory over Clearfield Monday night in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (5-1) — who have all eighth-graders on their roster — didn't allow a point until the second half, leading 31-0 going into halftime. Punxsy kept up the pressure during the second half, outscoring the Lady Bisons 28-3 during the final two quarters.

Brookville dismantles Karns City, 72-25

December 20, 2010

BROOKVILLE — It just wasn't a good night to be a Karns City boys' varsity basketball fan.

After knocking down a three-pointer to start the game, the Gremlins failed to score again until the 5:44 mark in the second quarter.

Oh, and the Raiders couldn't miss a shot, either.

Brookville quickly erased the deficit by outscoring its opponent 26-3 in the first quarter alone en route to an overwhelming 72-25 victory.

That one-sided score could have easily been even worse had both teams not emptied the benches late in the first half and throughout the second half.
