Graffius Avenue Structure Fire

November 2, 2010

Today at 10:45 a.m. Punxsutawney Fire Department was called to 211 Graffius Avenue for a fully involved structure fire. All occupants were out of the building. The American Red Cross was called in for assistance. See tomorrow's Spirit for more details.

Young's overtime goal rockets Chucks into first-ever district final

BROCKWAY — Punxsy head boys' soccer coach Phil Shenkle better nail down the copyright to Monday night's game in Brockway before someone else gets his or her hands on it.

For the third-straight meeting, the Punxsy and St. Marys boys' soccer teams played more than 80 minutes of competitive soccer that led to overtime, but this time, the Chucks were the ones celebrating at midfield.

A number of upperclassmen were celebrated during Senior Night prior to the Punxsutawney versus Brookville football game last Friday at Jack LaMarca Memorial Stadium. Punxsy won, 37-6.

Pitt wins pair of games in opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Basketball is in the air, as the Punxsutawney Elementary Girls' Basketball Tournament kicked off Monday night at the high school.

Overall, nine teams are taking part in the tournament, with five squads made up of fourth- and fifth-graders, and four teams in the sixth-grade grouping.

Pittsburgh 10, Ohio State 8

Pitt got started on the right foot Monday and moved to 2-0 on the day, beginning with a 10-8 win over Ohio State.

Leading the way for Pitt was Kate Horner with six points.

Keyana Ehause and Taylor Covatch both added two points in the win.

Weaver ruling delayed due to solicitor’s absence

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The members of the Punxsutawney Civil Service Commission were unable to shed any new light on the appeal from former Punxsutawney Borough Police Officer Sean Weaver regarding his not being hired on a permanent basis by borough council due to the absence of the solicitor at Monday’s meeting.

Commission Chairman Bill Leiberton and members Mike Ruffner and Rich Alexander were in attendance for the meeting in which they were scheduled to vote on hearing Weaver’s appeal from the Oct. 4 meeting.

OPENING A NEW HOME

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of Alternative Fuel Solutions of Pennsylvania located at 6162 Colonel Drake Highway in Mahaffey last Friday. Alternative Fuel offers compressed natural gas fuel conversion for vehicles and equipment. John Rensel, a partner in Alternative Fuel with Dennis O’Donnell, said that the shallow well natural gas formation can be taken right out of the ground and put through a filter or a dryer, and put right into your vehicle. Over a month of hard work paid off for this group of 18 as they earned first place in the Best Group category for their detailed costumes from “The Wizard of Oz” Saturday at Barclay Square. Police hold seat belt check at PAHS

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students at Punxsutawney Area High School passed a very important test Friday, and it had nothing to do with their future plans, as a seat belt safety check was held by Punxsutawney Borough Police while students began head home.

Shawn Houck, safety officer for PennDOT District 10, assisted with planning the safety check with Punxsutawney Police Chief Tom Fedigan.

Houck said that it is very important to remind young drivers to to always buckle up.
