EMPORIUM — The Punxsy boys' basketball team kept things close every quarter, but could never pull ahead during a 62-45 season-opening loss to Cameron County Friday night in Emporium.

The Chucks (0-1) received more bad news after the loss, as senior forward Darren Pifer may have suffered a concussion after a hard fall with 7:14 left in the third quarter. Pifer's status for Punxsy's next game — Tuesday in Redbank Valley — is uncertain at this time.

Junior Logan Weaver led the Chucks with 21 points, nailing three three-pointers. He added eight rebounds and three assists.

The Chucks — which went 10-7 last year as eighth-graders — are led by Brandon Krug this season. Krug, a 2002 PAHS graduate, is coaching junior-high ball for the first time in Punxsy.

"The whole team played together," Krug said. "Our defense and intensity were the difference in the game."

Brandon Mancuso led the Chucks with 18 points. Following Mancuso was Tanner Evans, who managed seven points.

Boot drive helps collect food for holidays

December 10, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This weekend marks the 27th anniversary of the Punxsutawney Fire Department’s annual food drive, which this year will be held Saturday and Sunday.

Bill Zimmerman, along with fellow Central Fire Department members Bob Hockinson and Warren Kellert, established the drive in 1983.

Zimmerman said they realized the Salvation Army — the only food bank in town at that time — had a need because people were hurting, just like today.

“We felt it was a good thing to do, to help the Salvation Army once we took care of the people who just fell through the cracks,” he said.
