December 20th
Verne D. Hoffman Jr., 84, Brookville, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born March 9, 1926, in Brookville, a son of the late Verne D. and Janet Sarah (Evans) Hoffman Sr.
Aug. 31, 1956, in Akron, Ohio, he married Patricia E. Lucas, who survives.
Mr. Hoffman was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
Sandra Jean Burge, 61, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born Nov. 12, 1949, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Aden and Betty Hoffman.
Mrs. Burge was married to Donald Burge, who preceded her in death Nov. 3, 2001.
She was a caregiver.

BROOKVILLE — A dominant first quarter carried into a huge victory for the Punxsy ninth-grade boys' basketball team last Friday night in Brookville.
The Chucks led 21-4 after the first quarter before earning a 52-43 win over the Raiders.
"The first half was the best half of basketball we have played this year," Punxsy coach Brandon Krug said. "On both ends of the floor, we were really on top of our game."
The Chucks' lead improved to 35-16 by halftime before the Raiders avoided the blowout with a 27-17 second half.
Ronald L. Skinner Sr., 79, Home, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 30, 1931, in South Mahoning Township, a son of the late James and Velma Arlene (Johnston) Skinner Nelson.
He was married for 59 years to Violet J. (Foltz) Skinner, who survives.
Mr. Skinner was a graduate of Marion Center High School, the class of 1949; he served in the Korean War and was a corporal in the 25th Infantry Division.
Mrs. Sarah Catherine Burkett Chipps, 72, South Boston, Va., died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born Dec. 14, 1938, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late Leonard J. Burkett and Ruth Mae (Stormer) Burkett.
Mrs. Chipps was married to Murray Steve Chipps Sr., who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith and was project officer for Southside Community Services.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — PennDOT District 10 has not closed the purchase of the house located adjacent to the Route 119 (Ridge Avenue) and Route 310 (Elk Run Avenue) intersection.
Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager, said at a recent borough council meeting that PennDOT is hoping to close on the property after the holidays.
Mark Rozich, PennDOT District 10 highway design engineer, said at last month’s Route 119 committee meeting that the purchase of the brown house on the corner of the intersection for demolition became a really complicated issue from an appraisal standpoint.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — There was one injury reported in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 1:10 p.m. Friday at the five points intersection in Punxsutawney.
According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, a Chevrolet Sedan, driven by Stacey Lasher, Punxsutawney, was traveling north on West Mahoning Street and was making a left onto Route 436.

Fractured His Skull
A.L. McQuilkin, a prominent West Mahoning farmer, was badly injured at Dayton, Armstrong County, last Thursday, and is still lying there in a precarious condition.

BROOKVILLE — The Punxsy boys' basketball team had the right game plan to counteract Brookville's height, but the Chucks' struggles from behind the three-point line led to a 50-42 loss to the Raiders Friday night on the road.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team won its first game of the season Friday, downing the Clarion Lady Bobcats in Punxsutawney, 34-13.
The Lady Chucks jetted out to a 7-0 lead, only for Clarion to come back with a pair of buckets that set the score at 7-4 after one quarter. Everything changed after the first quarter, as the Lady Chucks finished the game on a 27-9 run.
Punxsy outscored the Lady Bobcats by a 15-3 margin during the second quarter, taking a 22-7 advantage into the break.
