Steve J. Hudzick Jr., 82

Steve J. Hudzick Jr., 82, Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at home with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Rochester Mills, a son of the late Steve J. and Mary (Hudak) Hudzick Sr.

June 3, 1952, he married his beloved wife, Emma C. Hudzick, who preceded him in death Oct. 31, 2005.

Mr. Hudzick was a proud 40-year member of the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company.

He enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, his family and good friends. He was also an avid reader.

Chucks primed to jump back above .500 in 10-11

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As losses due to way too many forfeits continue to be something of the past, the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team is focused on improving and finishing above .500 after an 8-9 season last year.

The Chucks were known for having a small roster, but benefited from hard-working wrestlers while managing a combined record of 22-16 from 2006 to 2009. Now, with 28 wrestlers on the roster after having 26 at the outset of last season, the Chucks are ready to return to their winning ways.

Richard “Decent” Francis Havrilla, 58

December 8, 2010

Richard “Decent” Francis Havrilla, 58, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at DuBois Nursing Home.

He was born May 30, 1952, in Punxsutawney, a son of Eleanor “Ellie” Mary (Pawhutsky) Havrilla, who she survives, and the late Richard Carl Havrilla.

Mr. Havrilla had a passion for life and a love for music. He played bass guitar in various local bands such as The Reason Why, The Worthy Generation, Tyme, Kaos and most recently G3. He liked to help other people, and had played guitar in charity benefits. He was deeply touched when friends organized a benefit on his behalf. 

John Daniel Leinbach, 77

John Daniel Leinbach, 77, of Indiana, and formerly of Glen Campbell, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at his home.

He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Clearfield, a son of Daniel S. and Florence E. (Hall) Leinbach.

A 1951 Punxsutawney High School graduate, Mr. Leinbach served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1951 to August 1955 during the time of the Korean conflict.

Conrad, Molinaro to again lead PASD school board

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board again returned Gary Conrad as president and Francis J. Molinaro as vice-president during its annual reorganization meeting.

Conducting the early part of the meeting, Solicitor David Young accepted Jeff Martz’s motion and Molinaro’s second to nominate Conrad as president. The motion passed 6-3, with Martz, Molinaro, Conrad and board members Penny Pifer, Roberta Dinsmore and Lesa Conner voting n support.

Board members Bob Pascuzzo, Penny Pearce and Jack White voted against the motion.

Who needs a catalog? District turns to tech ed students for elbow room

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When in the need for more elbow room for meetings and conferences in the conference room at the Punxsutawney Area School District’s Central Office, Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe didn’t look to a catalog or online: He looked to the Technology Education Department at PAHS.

Monday, the school board thanked and saluted 14 Tech Ed students for the speedy — yet quality — construction of two new tables for the conference room.

PRIDE: More snow piles this winter?

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Even though winter has barely begun, snow removal in the downtown business district was a major part of a discussion at Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting.

Shirley Sharp of PRIDE (Punxsutawney Revitalization: Investing, Developing Enhancing) reminded the committee about the large piles of snow piled higher than the parking meters this past February, not only downtown, but throughout all other business districts.
