PUNXSUTAWNEY â This weekend marks the 27th anniversary of the Punxsutawney Fire Departmentâs annual food drive, which this year will be held Saturday and Sunday.
Bill Zimmerman, along with fellow Central Fire Department members Bob Hockinson and Warren Kellert, established the drive in 1983.
Zimmerman said they realized the Salvation Army â the only food bank in town at that time â had a need because people were hurting, just like today.
âWe felt it was a good thing to do, to help the Salvation Army once we took care of the people who just fell through the cracks,â he said.
Punxsutawney Area High Schoolâs National Honor Society inducted 20 new members during a ceremony Thursday evening. Four seniors and 16 juniors were welcomed into the academic society, which is founded upon the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service and character, after meeting requirements of maintaining a 95-percent GPA and undergoing an application process. âThey really and truly have to be the best students in our school to be part of the National Honor Society,â Principal David London said.
The following is from The Punxsutawney Spirit's âWhere Are They Now?â series. The focus is to catch up with former Punxsy athletes to find out what made them a success growing up, and what they are doing today.
BAYTOWN, Texas â Bob Strano always wanted to be the guy in charge.
Even at a young age, back in junior-high, being a leader was his ultimate goal.
Strano, a 1966 Punxsutawney Area High School graduate, recently found a scrapbook from when he was an eighth-grader, and inside was what he wanted to be when he grew up.
