Game-winning three at buzzer stuns Chucks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Marion Center sophomore Brodey Thompson may not have been included on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, but his three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Stingers past the Punxsy boys' basketball team Thursday night in front of a near-capacity crowd in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (3-3) were ahead 49-48 with 9.3 seconds left before Daniel Triponey missed the front end of a one-and-one. As Marion Center's sharp shooting Alex Woodrow, the tournament MVP, raced down court, he was met by one of Punxsy's tallest players — Luke Janocha.

Offensive issues derail Punxsy during 43-25 loss

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A day after scoring eight second-half points, the Punxsy girls' basketball team scored just 10 during the final two quarters Thursday to drop both games of the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (2-6) trailed 28-20 after three quarters, but Hazleton was able to pull away with a 15-5 final quarter to earn a 43-25 victory in the tournament's consolation game.

• After seven years of war, President Obama formally declared the U.S. combat mission in Iraq to be over.

In contesting no victory, Obama concluded the war with 4,400 dead troops, in addition to tens of thousands injured and hundreds of billions of dollars spent.

He acknowledged the future of the nation with a commitment to fixing the exhausted economy.

• Sept. 2, following the explosion of an oil platform off the coast of Louisiana, all 13 crew members were rescued.

This marked the second disaster in the Gulf of Mexico within a five-month period.

Bill Cooper says he’s retiring while he can enjoy it

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Bill Cooper recalled Thursday that his mother used to have a needlepoint pillow bearing the words, “After 40, it’s patch, patch, patch.”

“Forty sometimes becomes 50, but this year, I’ve had a lot of patches,” said Cooper, 64, who is retiring after a 35-year career with S&T Bank. “I want to retire while I have the health to enjoy it.”

Having undergone quadruple bypass surgery in July 2008, he said, “That gets your attention.”

His last day at the bank, where he serves as regional vice-president for commercial lending, is Monday.

MAY

• May 1, PAHS was the scene of the annual mock crash, an event sponsored by SADD, in which the results of drinking and driving are graphically portrayed.

• A fire destroyed a home at 144 Lower Clinton St., in Rossiter. The house was occupied by William Travis Jr., Marie Ondoua and their 19-month-old son, Domenic. It was ruled accidental by Punxsutawney-based State Police fire marshal Mick McCracken.

• May 3, PAHS juniors and seniors named Kaylyn Means as the prom queen, and Kyle Straub as the prom king at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

Chucks advance to final with win over Clarion

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior tandem of Daniel Triponey and Logan Weaver combined for 40 points during the Chucks' 61-48 triumph over Clarion during the first day of the 16th-annual Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

Triponey led with a game-high 23 points, and Weaver followed with 17 points, as the Chucks returned to the tournament's championship game after missing out last year.

Punxsy will face Marion Center at 7:45 p.m. tonight with the title on the line. Marion Center is coming off a 61-42 victory over Redbank Valley earlier Wednesday.

Lady Chucks miss out on championship game again

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' basketball team was unable to crack 30 points before missing out on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Championship Game for the third-straight season during a 41-29 loss to Westmont Hilltop Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago scored 18 points, but she didn't receive much help, as the rest of the Lady Chucks' roster combined for 11 points.

Junior Alex Magill added seven points, and Parris Kernich tallied two.

Commissioners: No more building projects in 2011

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Commissioners met Tuesday and discussed possible projects, or rather, a lack thereof, on the horizon in 2011.

The commissioners reported that there are no large scale projects involving county-owned property for the upcoming year.

The commissioners were forced to make emergency repairs to the courthouse, 911 center and jail this past year.

Jean Douthit, 80

December 30, 2010

Jean Douthit, 80, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Golden Living Center in Shippenville.

She was born Aug. 17, 1930, a daughter of the late Carlton and Jane (Lewis) Reitz.

She was married to Howard Douthit, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Douthit was a member of the Cloe United Methodist Church.

The best Punxsy sports moments of the year

There were many moments that Punxsy sports fans have cherished and won't soon forget from 2010. The following are Punxsutawney's greatest triumphs and achievements from this year.

Pennington honored by state

Punxsy's Braedon Pennington was named to the 2009 Associated Press All-State Class AAA First Team as a defensive back following his senior season by Pennsylvania sports writers after helping send the Chucks to their first District IX Class AAA title since 1991.
