Turnovers cost Chucks district title

DUBOIS — During the Punxsy football team's perfect regular season, the Chucks very rarely turned the ball over.

Four Punxsy turnovers tipped what was a close game through three-plus quarters in Clearfield's favor, as the Bisons exited E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois with the 2010 District IX Class AAA Championship after a 26-14 victory over the Chucks.

Raiders hope history doesn’t repeat itself

CLARION — The last time the Raiders played in postseason football action, they were run off the field following a 55-7 blowout at the hands of Moniteau.

Brookville is sure hoping that two years can make a world of difference.

The Raiders and the Warriors will square off in the semifinal round of the District IX Class AA playoffs at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. tonight with a spot in the championship game against Brockway on the line.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If Steelers kicker Jeff Reed should ever be sidelined with an injury, his back-up could be waiting on a football field in Punxsutawney.

Laney Monroe, a nine-year-old third-grader at SS.C.D., has been playing catch with baseballs, soccer balls, basketballs and footballs ever since she was able to get her hands around one, and now has a chance to display her years of practice by taking part in the eight-to-nine-year-old girls’ bracket in the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick program.

Red Kettle drive seeks to raise $50,000

PUNXSUTAWNEY —Bells will be ringing throughout Punxsutawney as the holiday fund-raising season was welcomed by the Salvation Army’s Kettle Kick-Off Friday.

This year’s kettle campaign goal is $50,000, Commanding Officer Captain Keith Jache said.

“We’re hoping to reach at least that so we can help people at Christ-mastime and throughout the year,” he said.

The County Market kick-off, which offers a $2 meal that includes a hot dog, soda and bag of chips, will continue today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Three-year-old Brinley Hallman, daughter of Brian and Kristi Hallman, had a special message for the Punxsy Chucks during a pep rally hosted by the 1st & 10 Club at PAHS before the team departed for DuBois to face Clearfield Friday evening. Mildred L. Hoch, 88

Mildred L. Hoch, 88, Sprankle Mills, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at her home.

She was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Oliver Township, a daughter of the late Manuel J. and Myrtle (Moore) Burkett.

Jan. 20, 1944, she married Clarence L. Hoch, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 2010.

Dominic V. Fernichio, 93

Dominic V. Fernichio, 93, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.

He was born July 11, 1917, in Mt. Jewett, a son of the late Anthony and Angeline (Ignota) Fernichio.

Mr. Fernichio was married to Grace (Gigliotti) Fernichio, who preceded him in death.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Normandy Landings and the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Fernichio was a clerk at Brown’s Boot Shop and a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church in Punxsutawney.

Mary Ann Bishop, 63

Mary Ann Bishop, 63, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 28, 1947, in Millerstown, a daughter of the late Roy E. and Dorothy (Huffman) Ogden.

Feb. 25, 1994, she married William Eugene Bishop, who survives.

Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

She was a self-employed licensed psychologist and professional counselor and had previously worked as the clinical director at the Larned State Hospital for the criminally insane in Larned, Kansas. She enjoyed her work and helping others.

Demystifying Veterans’ Day

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A Veterans’ Day ceremony was held by VFW Post 2076, American Legion Post 62 and Punxsutawney Ladies’ Auxiliary at First Baptist Church, Thursday.

Guest speaker Ira Sunderland, a Korean War veteran and past county commissioner, addressed the audience with the simple question of: “What is Veterans’ Day?”

“I’ll venture to say if we go down the street and ask 10 people, ‘What does Veterans’ Day really mean,’ I’ll bet there would be nine people who’d say, ‘I really don’t know,’” Sunderland said.
