CRW Home Center comes a long way from humble beginnings

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Twenty-one years ago, the current CRW Home Center established itself as a small showroom tucked away along Mulberry Alley.

Fast-forward to 2010, when CRW now stretches out in a 35,000-square foot facility with 19 full- and part-time employees, and owners Tim and Cindy Chambers and their store have been named the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Small Business of the Year.

“A little birdie had said I better make sure I go” to the annual Chamber banquet Thursday at the Punxsutawney Country Club, Tim Chambers said. “I thought, ‘OK, now I know why.’”

School district eyes taking part in NFL wellness program

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students who attend PAMS and PAHS could have the opportunity to kick off a program that helps them not only get into better physical condition, but to learn to eat better, as well.

PAMS Assistant Principal Michael Guidice recently told the Punxsutawney Area School Board that the National Dairy Council (NDC) and National Football League (NFL) are helping schools across the country score big with Fuel Up to Play 60, a program to tackle childhood obesity by giving young people a voice in changing the school nutrition and physical activity environment.

BREAKING NEWS: West Shamokin forfeits Friday football game due to lack of players

PUNXSUTAWNEY — According to PAHS Principal David London, West Shamokin has forfeited its football game — scheduled for Friday in Rural Valley — against the Punxsy Chucks due to lack of players.

London said Thursday afternoon, West Shamokin Athletic Director Tom McClain notified him and Punxsy Athletic Director John Knopick that the Wolves are unable to field enough eligible players for the game.

London said the forfeit moves Punxsy's record to 10-0, and playoff points will be awarded to Punxsy for the win.

Helen Ruth (Piper) Schrock, 100,

Punxsutawney, (the Fordham area), died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, four days short of her 101st birthday, with her family by her side.

She was born Nov. 5, 1909, in Emporium, a daughter of the late John and Addie Piper.

She was married to Clair Schrock, who survives. They were married for 68 years.

After marrying in 1942, the couple moved to the Punxsutawney area, and in 1950, to their home near Valier. There, Mrs. Schrock was a homemaker and helped Clair run their farm where they raised chickens and later beef cattle.

Todd Andrew Stiver, 45

Anita, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at home.

He was born Feb. 12, 1965, in Anita, a son of James and Andrea (Zeedick) Stiver, who survive in Anita.

Mr. Stiver was employed by Brookville Wood Products and enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his ATV and being outdoors. He also enjoyed his granddaughter, Harper, who was the light of his life.

CLARION — The Punxsy boys' soccer team fell one magical moment shy of winning a District IX Class AA Championship in its first-ever appearance in the district's final game of the season.

The Chucks (15-4-1) scored midway through the first half, but as the clock continued to roll, Bradford (14-6) came closer and closer to scoring the equalizer.

After the Owls tied the game with eight minutes remaining in regulation, they scored again with seven minutes left in double overtime to earn the district title Wednesday night at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium, 2-1.

A number of upperclassmen were celebrated during Senior Night prior to the Punxsutawney versus Brookville football game last Friday at Jack LaMarca Memorial Stadium. Punxsy won, 37-6. Pitt improves to 4-0 at elementary tournament

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After Day Three of the Punxsutawney elementary girls' basketball tournament Wednesday, only Pitt remained undefeated going into Friday's final day of competition.

The fourth- and fifth-grade division Panthers improved to 4-0, while the only other previously-undefeated team, the sixth-grade UConn Huskies, suffered its first loss of the tournament, dropping to 2-1 in competition this week.

Pittsburgh 24, UCLA 5

Pitt (4-0) continued its dominance Wednesday, as it took down UCLA (0-3), 24-5.

Leaf collection runs until Nov. 12 in Punxsy borough

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Haven’t raked your leaves for collection yet? That’s OK; borough residents have until next Friday, when the collection ends.

Roger Steele, chairman of the Public Works Committee, announced at Tuesday’s meeting that the collection continues on schedule at this time, and Borough Manager Ben White said crews hope to have all leaves collected by Friday, Nov. 12.

“Those frosty nights we’ve been experiencing knocked most of the leaves onto the ground this past week,” White said.

Oregon woman’s horseback trek isn’t for a cause, but for a dream

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Kathleen Dodds isn’t riding her two Appaloosas across the United States for a political cause, a social movement or to bring attention to a common or uncommon medical phenomena.

If she’s riding for any cause, it’s to encourage people to follow their dreams.
