PUNXSUTAWNEY â The 2010 Punxsy football team accomplished something that hasn't been done in more than three decades at Punxsutawney Area High School: An undefeated regular season.
A year after finishing 9-3 while hosting the District IX Class AAA Championship, and three seasons removed from a winless campaign, the Chucks completed the 2010 regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record.
BROOKVILLE â In what was a bizarre football game from start to finish, the Brookville Raiders did enough to end the regular season with a home victory on Senior Night Friday.
During their 21-14 win over Redbank Valley, the Raiders encountered some good, some bad, and some really ugly situations on the field â situations that made Brookville look anything but the 8-2 team it is.
HERSHEY â Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko will make his third trip, and junior Dane Baker will compete for the second time at the PIAA Class AAA Cross Country Championships at noon today in Hershey.
It's been a while since a member of the Chucks has earned three-straight chances at winning a state title. Meterko finished in 180th place during each of his trips to states in 2008 and 2009. In '09, his time was 18:07, and his 2008 mark was 18:09.
James Simon Monroe Crooks, 84, of Home, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born in 1926 in Smicksburg, a son of the late Jesse M. and Erma E. (Eakman) Crooks.
He was married to his wife of 63 years, Dolly J. Cornman Crooks, who survives.
Mr. Crooks was a member of the Old Mahoning Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as an aviation cadet.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Former Punxsutawney Borough Police Officer Sean Weaver was turned down Friday for a hearing by the Punxsutawney Civil Service Commission in a continued attempt to get his job back.
Commission Solicitor Jeff Lundy, who was not available for Mondayâs meeting, filed his opinion on two issues: As to whether Weaver would be granted a hearing by the commission, and a request by Timothy Morris, Punxsutawney Borough Council solicitor, regarding the candidate eligibility list.
PUNXSUTAWNEY âThe Punxsutawney Area Community Center will host its second-annual Raffle Night tonight.
From 6 to 9 p.m., at the Pantall Hotelâs Rooftop, ticket holders are invited to join the festivities as the center raffles away an array of awards.
Guests will be entered into the drawings of numerous winnings, including a 42-inch HD TV; bedroom suite; sofa and chair set; vacuum cleaner; and several cash prizes, said Mick Mumau, president of the centerâs Board of Directors.
Tickets may be purchased at the door tonight.
