Senior-laden Lady Chucks look for sixth-straight district crown

November 5, 2010

CLARION — When a team is coming off a championship-winning season, many say that the target has been firmly placed on that squad's back.

For the Punxsy volleyball team, one could say that said target has been branded on the Lady Chucks' backs. And that doesn't bother them one bit.

The Lady Chucks, who completed another sterling season by finishing 16-2, accepts the fact that they're the favorites in Saturday's District IX Class AA Championships at Clarion Area High School. With that in mind, they're in search of their sixth-straight district title.

Schall leads four Lady Chucks into state meet

HERSHEY — Though the Punxsy girls' cross country team was unable to win its third-straight District IX Class AAA title last Saturday in Ridgway, the Lady Chucks will still send four runners to Saturday's state meet in Hershey.

Punxsy is led by two-time individual district champion and senior Milea Schall. Also to compete Saturday will be senior Shannon Byerly, sophomore Alexis Young and freshman Juliann Boddorf.

Schall claimed Punxsy's fourth individual district crown in a row, following in Kelsey Acre's footsteps as a two-time winner. Acre won the title in 2007 and 2008.

Raiders unable to hang on, fall to N. Potter

November 5, 2010

DUBOIS — Things could not have started any better for the Brookville Raiders Thursday night during the District IX Class A boys' championship game.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, the game didn't end at halftime.

Brookville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and held it into the second half before Northern Potter scored two second-half goals to win its second-straight District IX title in DuBois.

The loss leaves Brookville with a bitter taste, as the No. 7-seeded Raiders impressively reached the finals, only to surrender two late goals and miss out on their second title in three years.

CRW Home Center comes a long way from humble beginnings

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Twenty-one years ago, the current CRW Home Center established itself as a small showroom tucked away along Mulberry Alley.

Fast-forward to 2010, when CRW now stretches out in a 35,000-square foot facility with 19 full- and part-time employees, and owners Tim and Cindy Chambers and their store have been named the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Small Business of the Year.

“A little birdie had said I better make sure I go” to the annual Chamber banquet Thursday at the Punxsutawney Country Club, Tim Chambers said. “I thought, ‘OK, now I know why.’”

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students who attend PAMS and PAHS could have the opportunity to kick off a program that helps them not only get into better physical condition, but to learn to eat better, as well.

PAMS Assistant Principal Michael Guidice recently told the Punxsutawney Area School Board that the National Dairy Council (NDC) and National Football League (NFL) are helping schools across the country score big with Fuel Up to Play 60, a program to tackle childhood obesity by giving young people a voice in changing the school nutrition and physical activity environment.

November 5, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — According to PAHS Principal David London, West Shamokin has forfeited its football game — scheduled for Friday in Rural Valley — against the Punxsy Chucks due to lack of players.

London said Thursday afternoon, West Shamokin Athletic Director Tom McClain notified him and Punxsy Athletic Director John Knopick that the Wolves are unable to field enough eligible players for the game.

London said the forfeit moves Punxsy's record to 10-0, and playoff points will be awarded to Punxsy for the win.
