PUNXSUTAWNEY â A folded flag. A somber salute. A symphony of staggered rifle shots.
Yet, perhaps, the most recognizably heartbreaking offering lies in the thick, somber stillness as that slow, steady score sobers the silence. That one melancholy military cry serves to satisfy an absence of sound when fitting words cease to exist. A simple string of notes influences an unforgettable harmony, intended for âgoodnight,â but more often remembered for âgoodbye.â
That particular tune is known as âTaps.â
Each year, five women are chosen by the Punxsutawney Career Womenâs Club for Career Womenâs Week, which this year runs through Nov. 13. The criteria used for choosing these women are based not only on their professional efforts, but also on the contributions they have made to community and family.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The first work that will be done as part of the Route 310 and 119 intersection improvements will get begin Friday, when the railroad crossing on Route 119 will be reconstructed.
Monday, Borough Manager Ben White said PennDOT Engin-eering District 10 advises motorists that Route 119/Ridge Avenue will be closed in both directions at the railroad crossing.
The road closure is located between Route 310 and Route 2017 (Orchard Avenue), and will be in place from 6 p.m. Friday through noon Monday.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Coming off their sixth-straight District IX Class AA Championship, the Punxsy volleyball team feels as good as ever about its chances of advancing past the first stage of the PIAA playoffs this weekend.
In years past, Punxsy would run into a talented WPIAL foe that, for the most part, overpowered the Lady Chucks in a best-of-five match. This season, Punxsy will test its mettle against three teams in a round-robin tournament that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the North Hills Junior High School Annex.
Earl H. Wetzel, 84, Rochester Mills, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Indiana Regional medical Center.
He was born April 10, 1926, in Rayne Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Howard B. and Myrtle (Orr) Wetzel.
June 12, 1944, he married his wife of 66 years, Jean V. Farnsworth, who survives.
Mr. Wetzel spent his childhood on the farms of his parents and grandfather, H.H. Wetzel.
John J. Landolfi, 82, Gainesville, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital in Gainesville.
He was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Anthony and Antoinette (Cinque) Landolfi, who later moved to Edinburg.
He was married to Bonnie (Swanson) Landolfi, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Landolfi was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He was a carpenter for a local union based out of Pittsburgh for many years, as well as the owner of the Town Pump Tavern in Punxsutawney for more than 25 years.
Florence Frances Gidley, 84, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.
She was born April 10, 1926, in Alexandria, Va., a daughter of the late Russell Lyle and Ida Ketuma (Rochester) Linthicum.
Mrs. Gidley was married to Donald Gidley, who preceded her in death.
She was a Jehovahâs Witness and an active volunteer at Punxsutawney Area Hospital and Mulberry Square.
Dominic C. Fernichio, 93, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.
